The influence of layer charge on Zn2+ and Pb2+ sorption by smectites

Abstract: pB 2+ABSTRACT: Two smectites with different layer charge localization were used to characterize the chemical and structural aspects of minerals treated with 1.9 x 10 .2 M and 1 M heavy metal solutions (Zn 2 § and pb2+). Natural and treated smectites were analysed by: (1) X-ray powder diffraction first at 25~ and relative humidity of 60% and then at increasing temperature up to 400~ (2) thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis; (3) X-ray fluorescence; (4) atomic absorption and UV visible spectrophoto… Show more

“…The latter phase consisted of a continuous decrease in adsorption from 45 to 65°C. This can be attributed to the unstable interactions between the adsorbent and the adsorbate, and they confirm an exothermic nature of the adsorption process [27].…”

“…The beidellite sample is from Rasta, Recoaro Terme, Vicenza, Italy. The sample (Brigatti et al, 1996) has a structural formula of (Si7.51AI0.49)(A1288 Fe0.66Mg0.50Mn0.01Tio.04)(Ca0.2,~Na0.20K0.02)O20(OH)4, a tetrahedral layer charge of -0.49 electrostatic valence units (evu), an octahedral layer charge of -0.20 evu, and a CEC of 78 meq/100 g.…”
