The Influence of Monolayers on Evaporation from Water Storages. IV. The Spreading of Monolayers from Solids

Abstract: It is shown that the nature and the rate of spreading of a monolayer from a solid depends upon the state and extent of the solid source and upon the hydrodynamic resistance to spreading. Experimental data describing spreading from solid cetyl alcohol are presented.

“…Some lipids spread on an aqueous surface from the solid state without the aid of a spreading solvent [ Cary and Rideal , 1925a, 1925b; Mansfield , 1959, 1962; Deo et al , 1962, 1964; Gaines , 1966; Iwahashi et al , 1985; Fang and Joos , 1992]. When placed at the aqueous‐air interface, lipid molecules break off from the solid phase and disperse on the solution surface.…”

“…Spreading rates from solid lipids are reported in relatively few studies and are slow when compared to spreading rates of liquid lipids [ Gaines , 1966 and references therein; Fang and Joos , 1992]. Additionally, spreading rates of fatty alcohols are better quantified than fatty acids [ Cary and Rideal , 1925a, 1925b; Mansfield , 1959, 1962; Deo et al , 1962, 1964; Gaines , 1966; Fang and Joos , 1992].…”
