The influence of responsible leadership on environmental innovation and environmental performance: The moderating role of managerial discretion

Abstract: Based on stakeholder and upper‐echelon theories and following the logic of “leadership‐behavior‐performance,” this study constructs a model to investigate the relationships between responsible leadership, managerial discretion, environmental innovation, and firm's environmental performance. This study analyzed a sample of survey responses from 208 manufacturing firms. The results show that the three dimensions of responsible leadership (relationship building, relational governance, and sharing orientation) hav… Show more

“…Third, this work may contribute at the micro level of CSR research. The past literature has an emphasis on the implementation of CSR (Osagie et al, 2020), and impacts of CSR on organizational performance in response to the call for more caring about stakeholder benefits and sustainability (Farrington, 2017;Gu et al, 2013;Javed et al, 2020;Kim et al, 2017a;Liao & Zhang, 2020;Serra-Cantallops et al, 2018). These findings offer robust evidence on the impacts of CSR on employee green behavior and task performance, as well as enriching CSR research at a micro level (Aguinis & Glavas, 2019;Ahmed et al, 2020;Boan & Dedeolu, 2020;Cheema et al, 2020).…”

“…Responsible leadership emphasizes that supervisors value companies' sustainable development goals, which include taking social responsibility for the increasing challenges of pollution, resource waste, and food safety (Afsar et al, 2016;Liao & Zhang, 2020).…”

“…In summary, top management serves as the primary interface between internal and external of the firm (Dai et al, 2014;Hambrick & Mason, 1984). Although the role played by external institutional pressure should not be neglected, top management is the ultimate arbiter of firm's strategies (Liao & Zhang, 2020;Yigitbasioglu, 2015). When a firm truly regards environmental certification practice as its strategy based on top management support, environmental certification practice is more likely to be successfully implemented.…”

“…Earlier research work reflects that external GSCM activities for instance customer and supplier 10 collaborate which would mediate the implementation of internal GSCM activities, along with the obvious aim of environmental performance enhancement according to the supply-chain perception (Yu et al, 2019). Moreover, the establishment of associative links along with suppliers is encouraging for the growth and implementation of internal innovative environmental technologies (Liao & Zhang, 2020). According to the coordination theory as per empirical proves from the earlier research work stated by the researchers Liao and Zhang (2020), the scholars claimed that absence of internal GSCM growth and coordination along with external practices which would fail the environmental performance enhancements between manufacturing enterprises.…”

“…No one measured the integral internal coordination mechanisms and their associations towards the external mechanisms. The research work literature of environmental performance and GSCM practices has presented the perception over possible internal and external patterns of supply-chain which depends upon the associations for environmental performance enhancement (Liao & Zhang, 2020;Mores et al, 2018). The positive association between environmental performance and supply chain management is continuously verified in the research work literature.…”
