The Influence of Water Temperature and Flow on Year Class Strength of Twaite Shad (Alosa Fallax Fallax) From the River Severn, England.

Abstract: Year class strength (YCS) was estimated for the 25 year period between 1972 and 1996. The index (YCS) was based on the mean number of six year old female fish caught per tide (1972)(1973)(1974)(1975)(1976)(1977)(1978)(1979)(1980)(1981)(1982)(1983)(1984)(1985)(1986)(1987)(1988)(1989)(1990)(1991) in a net fishery at the start of the freshwater phase of their spawning migration, or predicted from juvenile data (1992)(1993)(1994)(1995)(1996). The variation in recruitment as measured by the coefficient of variation… Show more

“…The present study is one of the few studies of the biology of Allis Shad in the British Isles -others include Twomey (1967) and Doherty & McCarthy (2002) -and also provides comparable data on the Twaite Shad, which, in Great Britain, has previously been studied in detail mainly in waters associated with the Severn Estuary (Aprahamian, 1982(Aprahamian, , 1985(Aprahamian, , 1988(Aprahamian, , 1989Aprahamian & Aprahamian 2002). The work inevitably leads on to issues of further research and conservation, which are discussed below.…”

“…for Allis Shad it is generally 15-24°C (Dottrens, 1952;Hoestlandt, 1958;Philippart & Vranken, 1982) and for Twaite Shad, generally 15-22°C (Spillman, 1961;Svetovidov, 1963;Hass, 1968). Water temperatures can also influence year-class strength (Aprahamian & Aprahamian, 2002). The spawning period is normally April-July.…”

“…Year class strength was determined as described by APRAHAMIAN and APRAHAMIAN (2001). Annual survival rate was taken from the relationship between the number of 6 year old female shad caught in year n and the number of 7 year olds caught in year n+1 (Figure 1).…”

“…More specifically, larval survival is affected by temperature (Crecco and Savoy 1985;Savoy and Crecco 1988;Aprahamian and Aprahamian 2001).…”
