This descriptive cross-sectional study examined the factors that affect depression in adolescents focusing on how stressed they are regarding their appearance (hereafter, degree of appearance stress). Data from 6493 adolescents from the 2020 Korean Youth Risk Behavior Survey were used. Using SPSS 25.0, a complex sample plan file was created, weighted, and analyzed. The frequency, chi-square test, independent t-test, and linear regression were used for the complex sample analysis. The results showed that among adolescents with low appearance stress, depression was significantly affected by the number of breakfast meals, weight control efforts, smoking, loneliness, subjective physical appearance, and smartphone overdependence. Among those with high appearance stress, depression was significantly affected by academic grades, weight control efforts, drinking habits, loneliness, subjective physical appearance, and smartphone overdependence. Furthermore, these factors differed according to the degree of appearance stress. Thus, while developing interventions for mitigating depression in adolescents, the degree of appearance stress should be considered, and a differentiated strategy should be used accordingly.

Girls typically show much lower suicide rates than boys in most OECD countries. However, in South Korea, the suicide rate of girls almost reaches that of boys. Moreover, Korean girls’ suicide rate is remarkable even among other advanced countries. One potential approach to explaining Korean girls’ relatively high suicide rate is to investigate how their peer groups affect suicidal ideation, but this approach has rarely been explored in Korean adolescents. We tested how the gender heterogeneity of peer groups is associated with suicidal ideation by analyzing 2,990 adolescents from the 2018 Korean Children and Youth Well-Being Index Survey. For the analysis, logistic regression models with survey weights were used. The analysis revealed that adolescents with different-gender friends were associated with a higher likelihood of suicidal ideation than those with exclusively same-gender friends when adjusting for covariates. In addition, an analysis stratified by gender found that this association was significant only among girls. Furthermore, the protective power of having a mentor against suicidal ideation was significantly lower in girls with male and female friends than in girls with only female friends. The findings suggest a less protective role of different-gender peer groups for suicidal ideation among girls. During adolescent suicidality consultations, school counselors and practitioners should pay attention to the characteristics of adolescents’ peers, particularly their gender.

Influencing Factors for Generalized Anxiety and Loneliness in Adolescents: Focusing on Experience of Violence and Habitual Drug Use

This study is a descriptive survey research to examine the impacts of experience of violence and habitual drug use on generalized anxiety and loneliness among adolescents. The data of 54,948 middle and high school students were analyzed using raw data from the 16th (2020) Adolescents' Health Behavior Survey. Generalized anxiety was assessed by Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), and loneliness was measured using one self-reported item. A GAD-7 score of 10 or higher was defined as generalized anxiety, and loneliness was classified as having loneliness if the person frequently or always felt lonely during the last 12 months. The effects of experience of violence and habitual drug use on generalized anxiety and loneliness were tested using logistic regression analysis. Of the total subjects, generalized anxiety was 11.1%, and loneliness was 14.1%. In logistic regression, violence experience (odds ratio [OR]: 2.08; confidence interval [CI]: 1.71-2.53) and habitual drug use (OR: 1.88; CI: 1.46-2.42) were significantly associated with general anxiety even after adjusting for control variables. Also, violence experience (OR: 1.72; CI: 1.43-2.08) and habitual drug use (OR: 1.49; CI: 1.17-1.91) were significantly associated with loneliness. As a result of the study, it was confirmed that experience of violence and habitual drug use are risk factors for increasing generalized anxiety and loneliness. Therefore, it is necessary to develop and implement programs that improve mental health by reducing generalized anxiety and loneliness among adolescents who have experienced violence or habitually use drugs. In addition, it is suggested to conduct a study considering the protective factors that play an important role in improving mental health problems such as generalized anxiety and loneliness among adolescents.
