The Informing Sciences at a Crossroads: The Role of the Client

Abstract: The essential elements of an informing system are a sender, a communications pathway, and a client. Academic informing systems, however, are best viewed as two interacting informing systems, one that informs clients of a discipline, one that informs clients of the institution. The paper proposes that the greater the degree of overlap between the clients of these two systems, the stronger the position of an individual discipline is likely to be.MIS is presented as an example of a disciplinary informing system t… Show more

“…In the MIS disciplinary informing system, U.S. researchers have been found to favor informing internal clients (i.e., pure research and knowledge creation) to the exclusion of nearly all external clients (Gill & Bhattacherjee, 2007). This preference for internal client informing, however, generalizes to nearly all business research disciplines in the U.S. (Gill & Bhattacherjee, 2009;Pfeffer, 2007).…”

“…To date, our failures in achieving such relationships have been severe (e.g., Gill & Bhattacherjee, 2007;Pfeffer, 2007), a problem exacerbated by the substantial differences in knowledge structures employed by the two groups (Gill, 2008d). The argument we present is that professional doctorates, in business, can serve as a useful role in developing enduring informing relationships.…”

“…From the informing science perspective, an information system consists of a set of interrelated tasks, technology, structure, and people (Gill & Bhattacherjee, 2007). Therefore, while technology stands at the core of the informing science framework, issues regarding "biological and psychological issues in how clients attend, perceive, and act on information provided" (Cohen, 2009, p. 6) must be resolved.…”

“…These interfaces need to be specially designed to fit mobile screens due to different usage modes, such as touch screens (Parsons, 2007). For mobile devices, each information format requires specific development in order to make it accessible, as well as to cope with the informing challenge (Cohen, 2009;Gill & Bhattacherjee, 2007, 2009) and deliver the information effectively.…”
