The Inhibitory Effects of Djulis (Chenopodium formosanum) and Its Bioactive Compounds on Adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 Adipocytes

Abstract: The aim of this study was to provide new insights into the role of the ethanolic extracts of Djulis (Chenopodium formosanum, EECF) and its bioactive compounds in preventing adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. The results demonstrated EECF significantly inhibited oil red O-stained material (OROSM), triglyceride levels and glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GPDH) activity in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. The expression of the critical molecules involved in lipid synthesis such as PPARγ, C/EBPα and SREBP-1c was attenuated i… Show more

“…Intriguingly, this metabolite was not mentioned in a recent comparative metabolomic study of these two Lycium fruits 3 . As rutin derivatives have antioxidant potential and show low cytotoxicity in human and animal cells, which makes them promising potential candidates for use as nutraceuticals 69 , and as there are indications that rutin may suppress lipid accumulation in humans 70 , high rutin content in LR berries may be interesting from the nutritional and pharmaceutical perspective.…”

“…Betanin, in the range from 10-100 µM did not elicit any cytotoxicity effect on survival. However, betanin significantly inhibited adipocyte cell differentiation and lipid accumulation [76]. Since obesity increases cancer risk, one possible mechanism for betanins chemoprevention could be related to impeding this risk factor.…”

“…Two studies have been performed to investigate whether betanin plays a role in adipogenesis or not [74,75]. Both studies have depicted that treatment of 3T3-L1 cells with either betanin [74] or the ethanolic extracts of Djulis [75], which contains eleven ingredients in addition to betanin have resulted in the formation of a fewer number of oil droplets indicating reduced lipid accumulation. These manifestations were dose dependent with betanin concentrations in the range of 10-50 µM.…”
