Adaptive façades (AF) present a promising approach to reduce environmental impacts in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction sector. However, the automatization of the façade produces new challenges as the complexity of the system increases. To support the early phase of interdisciplinary development, solution collections such as databases are helpful. Previous research identified that existing solution collections of AF do not meet the requirements that such a method demands. In the effort to develop an optimized database, this paper investigates how the state of the art can be structured in terms of content in order to present it in the database. Here, a set of design parameters is developed based on identified requirements and on the main characteristics of AF that were previously elaborated. This set offers a comprehensive perspective on the previously realized functions and mechanisms of AF and can also contribute to finding creative solutions in the form of new concepts by combining the design parameters in new ways. Finally, 40 case studies of previously implemented adaptive façades are used to evaluate the set of design parameters.

This study explores the optimization of kinetic facades to promote environmental sustainability in building designs, addressing the critical issues of high energy consumption and CO2 emissions prevalent in the construction sector. The focus is on achieving an intricate balance between maximizing natural daylight and minimizing solar radiation using innovative kinetic facade designs. Parametric modeling tools are utilized in the design process to experiment with various facade configurations. The effectiveness of these designs is then validated using both digital and physical prototypes, with their adaptability to diverse climatic conditions evaluated through dynamic simulations. A key component of the study is the application of the Wallacei plugin for Grasshopper, which assists in multi-objective optimization to determine the most effective facade aperture ratios. The results demonstrates a substantial reduction in solar radiation levels, with a 70% decrease on the first floor and a 76% decrease on the seventh floor, achieved by optimizing aperture ratios. The study concludes that optimizing kinetic facades significantly improves building performance compared to traditional glass facades, offering an effective balance between daylight enhancement and solar radiation reduction, influenced by seasonal changes. It also emphasizes the importance of factors such as building height and the surrounding environment in facade design. Overall, the findings highlight kinetic facades as a viable solution for improving building efficiency and occupant comfort, suggesting a promising avenue for advancements in architectural design and construction.

Die Bilanzierung von Umweltwirkungen spielt eine entscheidende Rolle bei der Entwicklung nachhaltiger und umweltfreundlicher Technologien und Konzepte. Dies gilt auch in der Entwicklung von Gebäuden mit adaptiven Hüllen und Strukturen und stellt darüber hinaus weitreichende Anforderungen an alle beteiligten Disziplinen. Die vollständige Integration der Ökobilanzierung in den Planungs‐ und Auslegungsprozess ermöglicht, Umweltwirkungen als Optimierungsgrößen in den komplexen, dynamischen Berechnungswerkzeugen einzusetzen. Die bisherigen Ergebnisse des SFB 1244 bescheinigen adaptiven Tragwerken und Fassaden großes Potenzial zur Einsparung von Ressourcen und Umweltwirkungen. Die ganzheitliche Betrachtungsweise, sowohl in Bezug auf den Lebenszyklus als auch auf die interdisziplinären Wechselwirkungen, stellt sicher, dass die relevanten Effekte und Einflüsse in der Bilanzierung berücksichtigt werden. Das stellt die Methode der Ökobilanzierung selbst jedoch vor neue Herausforderungen im Umgang mit einer Vielzahl an Varianten und den umfangreichen Wechselwirkungen zwischen Auslegung und Einflüssen auf Parameter in der Nutzungsphase, wie z. B. den Energieverbrauch oder die Lebensdauer.
