The integration and testing of the Mini-EUSO multi-level trigger system

Abstract: The Mini-EUSO telescope is designed by the JEM-EUSO Collaboration to observe the UV emission of the Earth from the vantage point of the International Space Station (ISS) in low Earth orbit. The main goal of the mission is to map the Earth in the UV, thus increasing the technological readiness level of future EUSO experiments and to lay the groundwork for the detection of Extreme Energy Cosmic Rays (EECRs) from space. Due to its high time resolution of 2.5 us, Mini-EUSO is capable of detecting a wide range of U… Show more

“…Indeed, if more photons hit the same pixel within the double pulse resolution, just the first hit is recorded: the result is that the event looks fainter than it could be with a shorter double pulse resolution. Moreover, the experiment will also be upgraded with advanced self-triggering capabilities [12], replacing the current PDM data processing board with a new board with more memory and resources based on system-on chip (Zynq XC7Z030 FPGA [13]). It allows the implementation of data read-out on three timescales, to study different kind of phenomena.…”

“…The optical system consists of 2 Fresnel lenses of 25 cm diameter with a large FoV of ∼19 • . A multiple level trigger [22] will allow the measurement of UV transients at different time scales, complementing TUS observations. Laboratory experiments with Mini-EUSO engineering model and simulations confirm the sensitivity of Mini-EUSO to EECR-like transients around 10 21 eV.…”

“…A space project devoted to the study of EECRs such as JEM-EUSO should have enough quality in terms of exposure determination and EAS parameter reconstruction to satisfy the scientific requirements of such an ambitious mission. A review of the key results obtained by each experiment of the JEM-EUSO program in this respect is described in the following (details can be found in [3] - [22]).…”
