Spearman’s hypothesis tested at the subtest level of an IQ battery states that differences between races on the subtests of an IQ battery are a function of the g loadings of these subtests, such that there are small differences between races on subtests with low g loadings and large differences between races on subtests with high g loadings. Jensen (1998) stated that Spearman’s hypothesis is a law-like phenomenon. It has also been confirmed many times at the level of items of the Raven’s Progressive Matrices. This study hypothesizes that with concern to Spearman’s hypothesis, subtests and items function in fundamentally the same way, and tested whether Spearman’s hypothesis is confirmed at the item level for White–East Asian comparisons. A group of Korean young adults (N=205) was compared with other groups of young adults from Canada, the US, Russia, Peru and South Africa (total N=4770) who took the Advanced Progressive Matrices. Spearman’s hypothesis was strongly confirmed with a sample-size-weighted r with a value of 0.63. Computing the g loadings of the items of the Raven with either the Raven-g or the Wechsler-g led to the same conclusions. Tests of Spearman’s hypothesis yielded less-strong outcomes when the 36-item Advanced Progressive Matrices were used than when the 60-item Standard Progressive Matrices were used. There is a substantial correlation between sample size and the outcome of Spearman’s hypothesis. So, all four hypotheses were confirmed, showing that a part of the subtest-level nomological net replicates at the item level, strengthening the position that, with concern to Spearman’s hypothesis, subtests and items function fundamentally the same. It is concluded that Spearman’s hypothesis is still a law-like phenomenon. Detailed suggestions for follow-up research are made.

Rushton and Jensen argued that cognitive ability differs between human populations. But why are such differences expectable? Their answer: as modern humans spread out of Africa and into northern Eurasia, they entered colder and more seasonal climates that selected for the ability to plan ahead, in order to store food, make clothes, and build shelters for winter. This cold winter theory is supported by research on Paleolithic humans and recent hunter-gatherers. Tools become more diverse and complex as effective temperature decreases, apparently because food has to be obtained during limited periods and over large areas. There is also more storage of food and fuel and greater use of untended traps and snares. Finally, shelters have to be sturdier, and clothing more cold-resistant. The resulting cognitive demands are met primarily by women because the lack of opportunities for food gathering pushes them into more cognitively demanding tasks, like garment making, needlework, weaving, leatherworking, pottery, and kiln operation. The northern tier of Paleolithic Eurasia thus produced the “Original Industrial Revolution”—an explosion of creativity that preadapted its inhabitants for later developments, i.e., farming, more complex technology and social organization, and an increasingly future-oriented culture. Over time, these humans would spread south, replacing earlier populations that could less easily exploit the possibilities of the new cultural environment. As this environment developed further, it selected for further increases in cognitive ability. Indeed, mean intelligence seems to have risen during recorded history at temperate latitudes in Europe and East Asia. There is thus no unified theory for the evolution of human intelligence. A key stage was adaptation to cold winters during the Paleolithic, but much happened later.

В данной статье сообщается об исследовании интеллекта якутов и этнических русских в Якутии. Тестировались выборки из Якутска, столицы Якутии, в которой проживает почти треть населения региона, и из Вилюйска, города с населением примерно 10 600 человек, расположенного в 592 км к северо-западу от Якутска. Выборка из Якутска состояла из 52 этнических русских и 128 этнических якутов, учащихся типичных средних школ. Средний возраст в данной выборке был 12 лет. Выборка из Вилюйска состояла из 7 этнических русских и 236 этнических якутов, учащихся типичных средних школ. Средний возраст в данной выборке был 12,7 года. Выборки тестировались в ноябре 2015 г. с помощью Стандартных прогрессивных матриц плюс Равена. Тестирование проводилось первым автором, с временным ограничением в 1 час. IQ респондентов оценивался относительно норм британской стандартизации 2008 г. Основные результаты состояли в следующем. Во-первых, среднее взвешенное значение IQ двух выборок русских относительно британских норм составило 101,7. Однако, так как обе выборки были из городов, действительный IQ русских в Якутии будет, вероятно, примерно на 3-5 баллов IQ ниже этого значения. Во-вторых, IQ якутов был на 1,8 IQ балла ниже, чем у русских, но эта разница незначима (t = 0,76). Результаты, таким образом, говорят о том, что якуты и русские в Якутии имеют примерно одинаковый IQ.
