The Intensity and Shape of Inequality: The ABG Method of Distributional Analysis

Abstract: Inequality is anisotropic: its intensity varies by income level. We here develop a new tool, the isograph, to focus on local inequality and illustrate these variations. This method yields three coefficients which summarize the shape of inequality: a main coefficient, α, which measures inequality at the median; and two correction coefficients, β and γ, which pick up any differential curvature at the top and bottom of the distribution. The analysis of a set of 232 microdata samples from 41 different countries in… Show more

“…The higher the curve at a given level of X (logit rank), the greater are the income inequalities at this level (For more details, pls. refer Chauvel(2016)). As can be seen from the figure, there is more inequality in 2012 at the extremes than in 2005.…”

“…To answer this question, we need to examine the shape of inequalities at the local level. A pioneering work in this context has recently been made by Chauvel (2016). The author used the wellknown Champernowne I -Fisk (CF) distribution (Champernowne, 1937(Champernowne, , 1952Fisk, 1961) as a baseline for local inequality analysis and accordingly, has proposed an ABG (α, β, γ) method of estimating three inequality parameters, compatible with the Pareto properties of the tails.…”

“…While sociological approaches are typically based on social classes as defined by occupational characteristics, and those used by political scientists are based on belonging to particular social classes, economists prefer the measurement of income groups. The incomebased approach we apply here allows for improved detection of massive local transformations in the shape of societies, and specifically whether and where on the income scale a 'hollowing of the middle class' happens (Chauvel, 2016). Source: Luxembourg Income Study (Chauvel, 2016).…”
