“…Similar results were found in Sacramento splittail larvae (Deng et al 2008) and other fish and mammals (Chen, Belzile & Gunn 2001;Belzile, Chen, Gunn, Tong, Alarie & Delonchamp 2006;Huang et al 2013). Fish fed the diets in combination with vitamin E and Se or higher levels of vitamin E-contained diet alone (200 mg TA kg À1 ) had significantly reduced mercury content in muscle than those of the fish fed only Se-fortified diets (2 or 4 mg SeMet kg À1 ) and lower levels of vitamin E-contained diet (100 mg TA kg À1 ).…”

“…Other studies suggest that whole body concentrations of 10-20 mg kg À1 Hg could be lethal to fish (Niimi & Kissoon 1994). According to Huang, Strathe, Fadel, Johnson, Lin, Liu and Hung (2013), Se had protective effects on Hg toxicity when administered together in the diet. However, fish fed 4 mg SeMet kg À1 showed growth improvement in the absence of vitamin E. Penglase et al (2014b) reported elevated dietary SeMet (10 ppm) could partially protect adult female zebrafish, Danio rerio, from MeHg-induced reduction in growth and survival.…”

“…Deng et al (2000) had developed a combined technique that introduces oesophageal intubation, dorsal aorta cannulation and urinary catheterization into sturgeon study (Deng et al, 2000). This newly developed method had been successfully applied in white sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) to study the utilization of different sources and dosage of carbohydrates, the metabolic kinetics of methylmercury and selenium (Deng, Refstie, & Hung, 2001;Gisbert, Sainz, & Hung, 2003;Huang et al, 2013;Huang, Strathe, Fadel, et al, 2012a;Huang, Strathe, Hung, Boston, & Fadel, 2012;Huang, Strathe, Hung, et al, 2012;Tashjian, Teh, Sogomonyan, & Hung, 2006). The technique has the advantages of allowing quantitative delivery of nutrients, repeat sampling of blood and continuous collection of urine from individual fish with minimum stress, which would be making nutritional study in sturgeon more precise, efficient and economical than traditional growth study (Deng et al, 2000;Mazik, Plakas, & Stehly, 1994;Tashjian & Hung, 2003).…”
