The Intermediate r-process in Core-collapse Supernovae Driven by the Magneto-rotational Instability

Abstract: We investigated r-process nucleosynthesis in magneto-rotational supernovae, based on a new explosion mechanism induced by the magneto-rotational instability (MRI). A series of axisymmetric magnetohydrodynamical simulations with detailed microphysics including neutrino heating is performed, numerically resolving the MRI. Neutrino-heating dominated explosions, enhanced by magnetic fields, showed mildly neutronrich ejecta producing nuclei up toà 130 (i.e., the weak r-process), while explosion models with stronger… Show more

“…The models of neutron star or black hole mergers, type II supernova explosions, accretiondriven gravitational collapse, etc. are proposed in the literature, and so far there is no general consensus (Nishimura et al 2017). However, all agree that the r-process must occur in stars more massive than those in which nucleosynthesis proceeds in the main component of the s-process.…”

“…Magnetorotational (MR), or jet-driven, CCSNe (Bisnovatyi-Kogan 1970;LeBlanc & Wilson 1970;Wheeler et al 2002;Mösta et al 2014b) appear to provide far more promising conditions for r-process nucleosynthesis than neutrino-driven CCSNe (Winteler et al 2012;Nishimura et al 2015Nishimura et al , 2017, ejecting ∼ 10 −3 −10 −2 M of r-process material. While this theoretical yield is comparable to predictions for NS-NS mergers (e.g.…”

“…Support to the notion that jets play a role in the explosion of many CCSNe comes from observations (e.g., Lopez et al 2014;González-Casanova et al 2014;Milisavljevic et al 2015;Tanaka et al 2017) and theoretical arguments, including numerical simulations (e.g. Bromberg & Tchekhovskoy 2016;Gilkis 2017;Nishimura et al 2017). …”
