The Interplay Between Chamber Musicians During Two Public Performances of the Same Piece: A Novel Methodology Using the Concept of “Flow”

Abstract: The purpose of the study is to explore a new research methodology that will improve our understanding of “flow” through indicators of physiological and qualitative state. We examine indicators of “flow” experienced by musicians of a youth string quartet, two women (25, 29) and two men (23, 24). Electrocardiogram (ECG) equipment was used to record heart rate variability (HRV) data throughout the four movements in one and the same quartet performed during two concerts. Individual physiological indicators of flow… Show more

“…1−4 3) Flow. The possibility to experience « flow », effortless attention, 15,16 has been described as a strong emotion that could be experienced for instance during singing in a choir. Csikszentmihalyi who in 1990 introduced the concept in science stated: When in flow, a person is highly concentrated and absorbed in an ongoing activity − yet, there is no subjective feeling of mental effort.…”

“…With regard to music performance, HRV has already been investigated in some studies and described as a correlate of fear in the context of performance anxiety [8,14,69] but has not been established as a Biomarker. Just a few studies suppose a correlation between autonomic cardiac modulation and the flow experience during music performance [70,71]. Concerning therapeutic interventions, a randomized-controlled trial investigated a single-session biofeedback training on MPA and HRV with positive effects on HRV of a slow breathing group in comparison to controls [67].…”

“…In future research, studies of arousal during public performance in ecological settings should take into account the performance environment and performers' goals and mindset, to show more clearly how changes in arousal relate to the performers' placement in a specific concert situation. This could be done with a mixed-methods approach that includes physiological/behavioural measures and interviews/questionnaires, similar to the paradigm proposed by Bojner Horwitz et al ( 2020 ).…”
