The interplay of inflammation and remodeling in the pathogenesis of chronic rhinosinusitis: current understanding and future directions

Xinru Gong,
Zhoutong Han,
Hongli Fan
et al.

Abstract: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), a common clinical condition characterized by persistent mucosal inflammation and tissue remodeling, has a complex pathogenesis that is intricately linked to innate and adaptive immunity. A number of studies have demonstrated that a variety of immune cells and cytokines that play a vital role in mediating inflammation in CRS are also involved in remodeling of the nasal mucosa and the cells as well as different cytokines involved in remodeling in CRS are also able to exert some infl… Show more

“…An increasing number of studies have also unveiled the nonconducting functions of potassium channels ( Forzisi and Sesti, 2022 ). On the one hand, they can modulate intracellular calcium concentration by influencing the membrane potential of nonexcitable cells leading to changes of calcium-dependent signaling pathways; on the other hand, they can directly activate signaling pathway proteins to regulate fundamental cell functions, such as proliferation, migration, apoptosis, and cytokine secretion ( Forzisi and Sesti, 2022 ; Gong et al, 2023 ).…”

“…Nasal and sinus mucosal remodeling is an important pathophysiological basis for CRS, including epithelial cell damage, squamous metaplasia, and an increase in microvillus and goblet cells ( Gong et al, 2023 ; Xie et al, 2024 ), but the molecular mechanisms are not fully understood.…”

“…Studies have shown that the incidence of olfactory dysfunction secondary to CRS is between 56% and 74%, with significant effects on the quality of life, including effects on diet, communication, and emotional wellbeing and loss of perception of dangerous odors, such as gases and toxic and harmful gases. However, the underlying mechanism remains elusive (2)(3)(4)(5).…”
