“…Many of the included studies had small sample sizes, inadequate measurement of maternal support, and used measures of support that were insufficient and lacked adequately reported psychometric properties. Specifically, maternal support was measured via a subjective chart review conducted by nonresearchers (Heriot, 1996; Pintello & Zuravin, 2001) or using maternal support instruments with limited or unknown psychometric properties (e.g., Bolen & Lamb, 2007; Cohen & Mannarino, 1996, 1998; Deblinger et al, 1999; Everson et al, 1989; Leifer et al, 2001; Pintello & Zuravin, 2001) or that assessed support using 1 item (Everson et al, 1989; Runyan et al, 1992).…”

“…Criminal litigation is often protracted. Research indicates the delays in the court process exacerbate child trauma (Runyan, Hunter, Everson, & Whitcomb 1994). Sometimes prosecutor delays the child's individual or group treatment to avoid the defense's challenge that the child's account has been contaminated and to try to ensure the child will be emotional on the witness stand.…”

“…For example, Rosenthal, Feiring, and Taska (2003) reported that NOC support was moderately related to children’s postdisclosure depression, self-perception, and sexual anxiety. Thériault, Cyr, and Wright (2003) found that one (Parental Behaviors and Attitudes Questionnaire; Bergeron, Valla, Breton, Gaudet, & Berthiaume, 1993) of the two measures of maternal support was weakly to moderately related to children’s postdisclosure anxiety, depression, posttraumatic stress symptoms, sexual problems, dissociation, and anger, whereas the other measure of maternal support (Parental Responses After Disclosure Scale; Everson, Hunter, Runyan, & Edelsohn, 1989; Runyan et al, 1992) was only related to anxiety. Bolen and Lamb (2007) reported a strong relationship between NOC support and delinquent behavior, and a moderate relationship with anger and externalizing behaviors.…”

“…In several studies, this relationship simply did not materialize (Cyr et al, 2003; De Jong, 1988; Gries et al, 2000; Leifer, Kilbane, & Grossman, 2001; Leifer, Kilbane, & Skolnick, 2002; Mannarino & Cohen, 1996; Paredas, Leifer, & Kilbane, 2001; Quas, Goodman, & Jones, 2003). Even more common among studies assessing the relationship between NOC support and postdisclosure functioning in children was to have a mixture of significant and nonsignificant findings (Bolen & Lamb, 2007; Cohen & Mannarino, 1996, 2000; Everson et al, 1989; Gomes-Schwartz et al, 1990; Hazzard, Celano, Lawry, & Webb, 1995; Johnson & Kenkel, 1991; Leifer & Shapiro, 1995; Leifer et al, 1993; Morrison & Clavenna-Valleroy, 1998; Reyes, 2008; Rosenthal et al, 2003; Runyan et al, 1992; Smith et al, 2010; Spaccarelli & Fuchs, 1997; Thériault, Cyr, & Wright, 2003; Tremblay et al, 1999). Indeed, many studies had more null relationships, and sometimes many more, than significant relationships between NOC support and postdisclosure functioning in children (Bolen & Lamb, 2007; Cohen & Mannarino, 1996; Gomes-Schwartz et al, 1990; Hazzard et al, 1995; Leifer et al, 1993; Leifer & Shapiro, 1995; Reyes, 2008; Rosenthal et al, 2003; Smith et al, 2010).…”
