The intra-oral camera, dental health communication and oral hygiene

Abstract: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of oral-hygiene instruction in improving oral health in 100 patients following oral hygiene instruction, with and without use of an intra-oral camera. The two groups of 50 patients were similar in age and sex distributions, frequency of caries, plaque accumulation and gingival bleeding. Prospective improvements in oral hygiene and compliance were measured by means of plaque levels and gingival bleeding at baseline and four weeks later. While both groups showed a … Show more

“…11,12 Intraoral cameras were also found to be an efective tool to provide screening for early childhood caries in children in a school setting, with the additional advantages of allowing easy archiving of the images when compared to conventional visual examination methods and allowing scoring the images by multiple examiners as well as longitudinal analysis. 3 Furthermore, 88% of the patients in Willershausen et al's study reported that the camera provided useful and desirable extra information. 16 Willershausen et al's study demonstrated that intraoral cameras helped motivate patients to reduce plaque accumulation, as the intraoral camera group showed reduction of plaque levels when compared to the control group.…”

“…These results indicate that the pictures obtained using an intraoral camera can be reliably used to score caries. Also, ideally histological examination should have been used at the gold standard, since some meta-analysis reviews have shown that a clinical visual examination is poor for caries detection, presenting high specificity and low sensitivity [24]. However in our study, the clinical examination comparator was the only practical option.…”
