The Intricate Process of Psychoanalytic Research: Encountering the Intersubjective Experience of the Researcher–Participant Relationship

Abstract: Qualitative research in general and the psychoanalytically informed research interview method specifically, can be emotionally demanding on researchers as they form relationships with participants. This is especially the case when researchers and participants share particular identities and experiences. In this paper I reflect on my experience of interviewing mothers raising children with a visible physical disability about their maternal subjectivity. At times this was an emotionally demanding and ethically c… Show more

“…The relationship between the researcher and participant is critical to manage during the audio diary process, and prolonged engagement and interaction between researcher and participant can help mitigate emerging ethical issues. This prolonged engagement fits well within a social constructionist epistemology, which means that the facilitator and participant are co-constructing their experiences over time and can mean that participants are more actively involved in the research process (Harvey 2017). The researcher in an audio diary study is usually beholden to the participant's way of engaging or sometimes not engaging enough with the tool, resulting in the participant becoming an empowered agent of the research, rather than a subject for exploration (Dudgeon et al 2017).…”

“…Reflecting on identity also aids crystalizing and shaping one’s sense of identity, in turn one’s professional trajectory. Harvey (2013) suggests that foregrounding a researcher’s identity enhances research transparency and interpretation of research results. Interrogating researcher identity also enhances the level of analytical criticality as it aids researchers to be aware of their assumptions of various research decisions ( Harvey, 2013 ; Scaratti et al, 2021 ) including research questions and theoretical frameworks choices, methodological orientation, and methods of analysis ( Parker, 2020 ).…”

“…Yet, this attempt felt cruel, as he struggled to acknowledge Clare's difference, without implying her deviance. Clare's comments on the familiar discomfort of being othered provide an indication of the emotional labour that accompanies difference (Harvey, 2017). The politics of affect and performance are evident -"I … kept my defences at bay … and joined the conversation"performing what she understands the profession to perceive a psychologist-in-training to be.…”
