The intriguing relationship between coronary heart disease and mental disorders

Abstract: Coronary heart disease (CHD) and mental illness are among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Decades of research has revealed several, and sometimes surprising, links between CHD and mental illness, and has even suggested that both may actually cause one another. However, the precise nature of these links has not yet been clearly established. The goal of this paper, therefore, is to comprehensively review and discuss the state-of-the-art nature of the epidemiological and pathophysiologica… Show more

“…Since mental disorders have been previously identified as risk factors for several chronic diseases (e.g. hypertension; obesity, dementia) [11,[35][36][37] and showed to be associated with increased mortality [38,39] a crisis-oriented interdisciplinary intervention approach to promote wellbeing and mitigate the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health is urgently needed [6,[40][41][42].…”

“…Mental disorders (MD), such as major depression and anxiety disorders, are also a significant contributor to the global burden of disease. 14.3% of all deaths worldwide are attributable to MDs [ 2 ]. MDs have an enormous impact on healthcare costs, are associated with an increased risk of developing CHD, and worsen prognosis in established disease [ 3 ].…”

“…Chronic stress plays a significant role in the onset of severe and impairing psychiatric conditions [ 1 ], and mental stress represents one of the main cardiovascular risk factors capable of directly inducing myocardial ischemia [ 2 ]. Mental illness and ischemic heart disease appear thus to be correlated [ 3 ]. In particular, repeatedly experiencing hostility and emotions of hatred [ 4 ] and anger (such as in some psychiatric disorders [ 5 ]) appears to increase the risk of ischemic heart disease [ 6 ].…”
