The Investigation of Malaria Cases in Manisa between 2008-2012

Abstract: Imported malaria cases, due to increasing international travel and migration, have a serious endemic potential based on unsuitable or insufficient prophylaxis, although malaria cases have decreased notably by successful eradication studies in Turkey. This paper was prepared especially in order to point out this subject, because all of the cases were imported.

“…All of these cases were imported and the majority of patients had a travel history to African countries (20). Similarly, in the studies carried out in recent years in Bursa, Hatay and Manisa provinces, it has been reported that P. falciparum was responsible for the vast majority of malaria cases and patients had a travel history especially to African countries (19,21,22). In our study, it is thought that P. falciparum is high rate of causative agent among malaria cases due to the fact that all of the cases are from abroad and these patients had a travel history to African countries where the most common cases of malaria by P. falciparum are found in throughout the world or they came from these countries to Antalya.…”

“…1 When the data from Turkey were investigated, it was found that although local cases of malaria have decreased over the years, important malaria cases have been observed. [11][12][13][14] When signet ring forms are observed within erythrocytes in peripheral smears in the presence of an epidemiological history and periodic high fever, malaria could be considered as the primary diagnosis. 15,16 In the present case, malaria was assumed to be the initial diagnosis, since the ring-shaped parasites were observed within the erythrocytes in the first evaluation, and the region around Turkey is not endemic for human babesiosis.…”
