Benedict XVI in Caritas in Veritate advances a positive view of businesses that are hybrids between several traditional categories. He expects that the ''logic of gift'' that animates civil society infuses the market and the State with relations typical for it-reciprocity, gratuitousness, and solidarity. His theological rationale offers an answer to two questions that have largely remained open in the literature-why hybridization of business occurs and why it is desirable. A rational reconstruction of hybrid enterprise that goes beyond a simple taxonomy of types benefits from the Pope's call for an intrinsic integration of institutions and processes traditionally attributed to disparate spheres. The relational model of the Trinity defines the unity in diversity that accounts for the benefits of truly hybrid businesses, and the ''logic of gift'' serves as the agent of integration.

Resumo: O objetivo deste ensaio é propor uma reflexão teórica para entender como as características organizacionais de uma associação influenciam sua capacidade de cumprir seu papel de escola civil e democrática. As associações são consideradas importantes pois contribuem no processo democrático, dão voz a interesses especiais, regulam comportamentos, desenvolvem e divulgam inovações e criam recompensas psicológicas e sociais para quem delas participa. Entender por que os membros se associam, por que continuam associados e como as associações s e estruturam e são governadas mostra-se fundamental para entender as tensões, conflitos e dilemas inerentes na sua atuação como instituição civil na sociedade. Entre os problemas encontram-se a ameaça de oligarquização, o risco de promoção de elitismo e exclusão social e a descaracterização de um propósito social e público. Palavras-chave: Sociedade civil, democracia organizacional, governança associativa, organização de base associativa Abstract: The aim of this essay is to propose a theoretical reflection on how do the organizational characteristics of an association influence their ability to fulfill their role as civil and democratic schools. Associations are deemed important as they contribute to the democratic process, give voice to special interests, regulate behaviors, develop and disseminate innovations and create social and psychological rewards for their members. Understanding why members join, why they continue as members and how associations are structured and governed is crucial to understand the tensions, conflicts and dilemmas inherent in their role as civil institutions in society. Among the problems are the threat of oligarchization, the risk of promoting elitism and social exclusion and the loss of a social and public purpose. La demande des acteurs publics vis-à-vis des associations s'est orientée vers plus de transparence avec pour corollaire le développement de dispositifs de gestion spécifiques supposés renforcer la capacité d'évaluation des bailleurs de fonds. Dans le même temps, la part des financements globaux de fonctionnement a fortement diminué au profit de financements accordés sur la base d'activités spécifiques conduites par les associations. Il en découle l'obligation pour les associations de développer une expertise plus grande dans le montage de dossiers de financement dont le nombre et la technicité augmentent. Les résultats de cette recherche montrent la non-pertinence du seul modèle d'entreprise pour penser la professionnalisation d'une association du secteur social. L'observation d'une situation de crise dans une association soumise à une pression financière met à jour une création de sens qui s'articule autour de deux postures : le simple habillage de la relation aux financeurs (en jouant éventuellement sur les contradictions entre les discours nationaux et les pratiques locales des responsables de l'instruction des dossiers), et la recréation de marges de manoeuvre par l'exploration de nouvelles pistes de financement. Ces deux postures renvoient à des visions différentes de l'identité des associations et supposent des fondements différents de l'action collective. At the same time, the funding of administrative activities required for the management of NPOs has decreased in favor of the funding of operational and specific activities led by them. As a result, NPOs have to acquire new skills for the submission of funding requests whose number and expertise level have increased. This research shows that the firm-based model is irrelevant for an association involved in the social sector and that has been put under a lot of pressure from its public-based funders. This association is going through a crisis situation that has led to internal sense-making activities whose outcomes may be summed up in two main response patterns. Either to pretend to abide by the new rationale advocated by the public authorities and to play games, whenever a discrepancy occurs between this national discourse and the local practices of those in charge of processing the funding requests.
