“…In a systematic review, Edouard et al 46 indicated that the most reliable position for internal rotation (IR) and external rotation (ER) strength assessment was to be seated with 45º of shoulder abduction in the scapular plane. Berckmans et al 16 systematically reviewed 14 studies that examined isokinetic RC strength assessment among healthy overhead athletes and concluded that greater IR force resulted in lower functional deceleration ratio (ER/IR) on the dominant side as compared with the nondominant side. In their systematic review of studies that examined electromyography activity of the shoulder muscles, Spall et al 215 ascertained that RC tears were associated with longer duration of muscle activity in the upper trapezius during glenohumeral movements and greater fatigability of the anterior and middle deltoid during isometric hand gripping and overhead lifting.…”

“…Isokinetic strength profiles have been previously described in this context for shoulder and knee joints, for men's handball , soccer , baseball , judo , running ; and women's handball , gymnastics , and wrestling . These studies have provided valuable information about the muscular strength balance (peak torque of the agonist muscle/peak torque of the antagonist muscle) and muscular symmetry between limbs, which have been considered risk factors for injuries in several sports . For example, a balanced strength ratio between the external and internal rotators of shoulders is considered fundamental to ensure that the humeral head is centered in the glenoid , which is of fundamental importance for overhead sports .…”
