The Japanese Guidelines for Gastric Cancer Screening

Abstract: The guideline for gastric cancer screening guideline was developed based on the previously established method. Gastric cancer screening using photofluorography is recommended for population-based and opportunistic screening in Japan.

“…Furthermore, municipalities were also excluded if they did not perform the following examinations: gastric X-ray for gastric cancer, chest X-ray for lung cancer, fecal occult blood tests for colorectal cancer, Pap smear for cervical cancer, and mammography for breast cancer. These examinations are recommended for population-based screening as there is sufficient evidence to suggest that these tests reduce the cancer mortality rate in Japan (Hamashima et al, 2008;Hamashima et al, 2010;National cancer center, 2013). Of all municipalities, 1,718 (98.4%), 1,610 (92.2%), 1,726 (98.9%), 1,717 (98.3%), and 1,693 (97.0%) municipalities were included in the analyses for gastric, lung, colorectal, cervical, and breast cancer screening, respectively.…”

“…(5,7) In recent years, endoscopy has replaced photofluorography as the initial mass screening method in several cities in Japan. (8,9) This technique is increasingly useful for GC screening because of its high detection rate. In a study conducted in Niigata, Japan, the detection of GC by endoscopy was 2.7-4.6 times higher than that by direct or indirect UGIS.…”

“…Despite this promising result, direct evidence for the effectiveness of endoscopic screening for asymptomatic individuals is still limited. (8) In Korea, a nationwide GC screening program was started in 1999 as part of the National Cancer Screening Program (NCSP). (14) In 1999, the NCSP offered free-of-charge GC screening to medical aid recipients.…”
