The Joule Balance in orogress

Abstract: The Joule Balance method, for the same purpose but different from the Watt Balance method, is going on at NIM for several years. The first measurement result of the Planck constant h is 6.6261(5)×10 −34 Js with a measurement uncertainty of 7.7 × 10 −5 . The further plan for improvement is discussed.

“…Measurement of the dc value of the mutual inductance M is one of the key techniques in the joule balance experiment [1,2], which is under development at the National Institute of Metrology (NIM) to determine the Planck constant h. To precisely measure M, a standard square wave compensation method (SSCM) [3] has been proposed. In the SSCM, the M is directly obtained by measuring the time-integrated value of the induced voltage u(t), which is adjusted to be similar to a square wave from an applied current signal i(t) with a linear time dependence.…”

“…For the past few years, significant efforts have been made to link the unit of mass to a fundamental constant of physics with high accuracy. National metrology institutes have essentially developed two experiments-a silicon sphere [8] and watt balances [9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16]-to link the unit of mass respectively to the Avogadro and Planck constants. In 2001, the Laboratoire national de métrologie et d'essais (LNE) decided to develop a watt balance experiment in order to contribute to the international effort to redefine the kilogram.…”

“…In the joule balance, the movable coil hanging from the balance arm is subject to a vibration in every direction, which can be enlarged by any movement, especially when the movable coil is moved from z 1 to z 2 during the measurement of mutual inductance [5,6]. In order to decrease the vibration, the factors affecting the stability of the movable coil are analysed, so that actions can be taken to keep the movable coil in its preset state.…”
