The KASCADE-Grande Experiment and the LOPES Project

Abstract: KASCADE-Grande is the extension of the multi-detector setup KASCADE to cover a primary cosmic ray energy range from 100 TeV to 1 EeV. The enlarged EAS experiment provides comprehensive observations of cosmic rays in the energy region around the knee. Grande is an array of 700 x 700 sqm equipped with 37 plastic scintillator stations sensitive to measure energy deposits and arrival times of air shower particles. LOPES is a small radio antenna array to operate in conjunction with KASCADE-Grande in order to calibr… Show more

“…using satelliteor balloon-based detectors to observe cosmic-ray particles themselves); using EAS detectors makes it both technically and financially easier to cover a much wider area. Examples of modern EAS experiments include KASCADE-Grande in Germany, Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina and the Telescope Array in the United States [8][9] [10].…”

“…Officially, the experiment closed down early 2009, but it continues to provide data to guest experiments. In addition to HiSPARC, the LOPES [118] and TAUWER [119] experiments are external users of the KASCADE facility. Each detector signal receives a timestamp from the cluster electronics.…”
