The knowledge level of final year undergraduate health science students and medical interns about cardiopulmonary resuscitation at a university teaching hospital of Northwest Ethiopia

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a life-saving technique which is used after cardiopulmonary arrest. Chance of survival after arrest will increase if it is coupled with sufficient knowledge. Final year undergraduate health science students and interns manage many trauma and critically ill patients in our hospital. Even though all students took CPR training in undergraduate course, we sometimes saw difficulties in the resuscitation of patients after cardiopulmonary arrest by undergraduate heal… Show more

“…In India, one study found that about 19% of medical students received training [8]. Similarly, BLS training was reported to be inadequate among undergraduate students in Pakistan [7], Ethiopia [18], Nigeria [9], and Egypt [19]. On the other hand, in the USA, BLS training was recommended for every healthcare giver since 1966 [20], and most UK medical colleges offer BLS training [21].…”

“…This study recommends an Introduction of regular BLS courses with a certificate of completion into the undergraduate curriculum as a pre-graduation requirement to enhance the level of knowledge about BLS among medical students. In addition to the enrollment of medical students in the management of CPR patients under the supervision of emergency medicine specialist during their emergency medicine module as in the previous study done in Northwest Ethiopia found that anesthesia students' knowledge of CPR was higher than other students due to their frequent enrollment in the management of CPR patients [14].…”

“…Figure 4 : Correct responses precentages to questions assessing CPR knowledge according to gender 648 graduation, lack of knowledge, insufficient training, and inadequate practice of CPR have been documented among medical students in several studies among different countries [2,9,12,13,14]. Previous studies suggest continuous CPR program training to enhance students' knowledge with time to time testing and reassessment [12,9,13].…”

“…Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is the technique used in the cases of CRA. It consists of thoracic compressions (which are important for the perfusion of vital organs) and rescue breaths by means of artificial ventilation [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 ]. The quality of CPR is vitally important, and it depends on the level of knowledge and skills held by those who carry out the CPR.…”
