The Korean Hypertension Cohort study: design and baseline characteristics

Abstract: Results: This cohort enrolled 11,083 patients with HT. The mean age was 58.87 ± 11.5 years, 50.5% were male, and 31.4% were never-treated HT. Of the enrolled patients, 32.9% and 37.7% belonged to the high and moderate cardiovascular risk groups, respectively. Initial blood pressures were 149.4 ± 18.5/88.5 ± 12.5 mmHg. During the 2 years hospital data follow-up period, blood pressures lowered to 130.8 ± 14.1/78.0 ± 9.7 mmHg with 1.9 ± 1.0 tablet doses of antihypertensive medication. Cardiovascular events occurr… Show more

“…The KHC study enrolled 11,043 patients with hypertension who visited tertiary university hospitals for the first time and was had hypertension as a primary diagnosis from 2006 to 2011. The study design has been published previously [ 12 ]. “…The eligibility criteria included patients with hypertension who were regularly followed up at least three times out of four time points (1, 2–6, 7–12, 13–24 months) for a minimum of 2 years with laboratory evaluation and prescribed antihypertensive medications. Exclusion criteria were described in the design paper [ 12 ]. We followed up using 2-year hospital records linked with the NHIS-HEALS data from 2004 to 2018.…”

“…We collected information on patients treated for or newly diagnosed with hypertension in each hospital between 2006 and 2011. Details of the KHC have been published 8 . Hypertension was defined as systolic blood pressure (SBP)/diastolic blood pressure (DBP) at or above 140/90 mmHg without antihypertensive medications or SBP/DBP at or below 130/80 mmHg with antihypertensive medications.…”

“…The cardiovascular disease, organ damage, and cardiovascular risk factors were defined based on the 2018 Korean Society of Hypertension Guidelines for the Management of Hypertension (Supplementary Table 1). 8,9 Exclusion criteria were patients under 30 years of age at the first visit and patients receiving antihypertensive treatment for the primary diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases other than hypertension (eg, beta‐blockers after myocardial infarction). The clinical data were collected through the electronic medical records of each hospital.…”

“…In Korea, there has not yet been a national prospective cohort study in subjects with obesity or overweight for the evaluation of comorbidities and mortality in this population, although such prospective cohort studies exist in people with diabetes (Korean National Diabetes Program) or hypertension (Korean Hypertension Cohort study). 6 , 7 In this issue, Cho et al 8 published the methods and an initial report of the baseline characteristics of the participants in the Gangwon Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome Study. This is the first prospective cohort study planned and initiated by Korean Society for the Study of Obesity (KSSO), the official society for research on population with obesity in Korea.…”
