The Kurtz–Perry Powder Technique Revisited: A Study of the Effect of Reference Selection on Powder Second-Harmonic Generation Response

Abstract: The accurate evaluation of nonlinear optical (NLO) coefficient, the main parameter affecting light conversion efficiency, plays a crucial role in the development of NLO materials. The Kurtz–Perry powder technique can evaluate second-harmonic generation (SHG) intensity in pristine powder form, saving a significant amount of time and energy in the preliminary screening of materials. However, the Kurtz–Perry method has recently been subject to some controversy due to the limitations of the Kurtz–Perry theory and … Show more

“…This distinctive phenomenon has been observed in noncentrosymmetric media under intense light fields [ 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 ] and garnered significant interest in photonic and optoelectronic device applications [ 7 , 8 ], materials characterization [ 9 , 10 ], and optical frequency converters [ 11 , 12 ]. The Kurtz–Perry powder technique can evaluate second harmonic generation (SHG) intensity in pristine powder form, saving a significant amount of time and energy in the preliminary screening of materials [ 13 ]. Notably, the commercially successful bulk crystals such as Beta Barium Borate (BBO) and Lithium Triborate (LiB 3 O 5 ), etc., can be attributed to the exploitation of SHG.…”
