Multiproxy sedimentological, gamma-spec tro met ric, foraminiferal, cal car e ous nannoplankton, and otolith data were used for the re con struc tion of the Badenian (Mid dle Mio cene) his tory of the Moravian part of the Carpathian Foredeep. The study mate rial orig i nated from the new bore hole LOM-1, which drilled >20 metres of mo not o nous clayey siltstones with ex cep tion ally rich and well-pre served microfossil as sem blages. Dis tal parts of the Carpathian Foredeep (a forebulge depozone) are exposed in this suc ces sion. Gen er ally, a quiet en vi ron ment of outer shelf to up per bathyal of mo not o nous clayey silts was in terpreted, which is typ i cal for the prox i mal parts of a pe riph eral fore land ba sin. The sec tion stud ied can be sub di vided into six in ter vals, con firm ing the cy cli cal char ac ter of Mid dle Mio cene sed i men ta tion in the Cen tral Paratethys. Interannual os cil lations of nu tri ent con tent, tem per a ture and/or sa lin ity are in ter preted based on the os cil la tions of geo chem i cal as well as palaeo bio logi cal data. The turn over con nected with the ini ti a tion of the Mid dle Mio cene Cli ma tic Tran si tion is re corded above the LO (last oc cur rence) of Helicosphaera waltrans in agree ment with pre vi ous ob ser va tions in the Carpathian Foredeep. The changes in clude cool ing, a de crease in nu tri ents, a prob a ble in crease of the sa lin ity of sur face wa ter, and in crease of sea son al ity. Sea son al ity was man i fested by an al ter na tion of mixed and strat i fied wa ter col umns with a sea sonal in put of nutri ents. Con cern ing nu tri ents, sources of sea sonal riverine in put or sea sonal upwelling are both pos si ble.

Abstract:The reactions of foraminiferal and calcareous nannoplankton assemblages to global warming and cooling events in the time intervals of ca. 27 to 19 Ma and 13.5 to 15 Ma (Oligocene and Miocene) were studied in subtropical epicontinental seas influenced by local tectonic and palaeogeographic events (the Central Paratethys). Regardless of these local events, global climatic processes significantly influenced the palaeoenvironment within the marine basin. Warm intervals are characterized by a stable, humid climate and a high-nutrient regime, due primarily to increased continental input of phytodetritus and also locally due to seasonal upwelling. Coarse clastics deposited in a hyposaline environment characterize the marginal part of the basin. Aridification events causing decreased riverine input and consequent nutrient decreases, characterized cold intervals. Apparent seasonality, as well as catastrophic climatic events, induced stress conditions and the expansion of opportunistic taxa. Carbonate production and hypersaline facies characterize the marginal part of the basins. Hypersaline surface water triggered downwelling circulation and mixing of water masses. Decreased abundance or extinction of K-specialists during each cold interval accelerated their speciation in the subsequent warm interval. Local tectonic events led to discordances between local and global sea-level changes (tectonically triggered uplift or subsidence) or to local salt formation (in the rain shadows of newly-created mountains).

During the Middle Miocene, the northern Croatian Medvednica Mt. was an island within the Pannonian Basin System, situated on the SW margin of the Central Paratethys Sea. Miocene sedimentary rocks (the Late Badenian Bulimina-Bolivina Zone and Ammonia beccarii ecozone), from the SW slopes of Medvednica Mt. clearly reflect a transgressive-regressive cycle with emersion during the Badenian/Sarmatian boundary. After the initial phase of transgression, the pioneer Elphidium-Asterigerinata-Ammonia benthic foraminiferal assemblage is present in bioclastic limestones, such as those at the Borovnjak locality. This marginal marine assemblage from a highly energetic, normally saline environment is characterized by poor preservation of foraminiferal tests, low diversity and strong domination. Advanced transgression is followed by establishment of the Elphidium-Asterigerinata assemblage, which is found in biocalcsiltites from the laterally deeper and more sheltered environment at Gornje Vrapče. This diverse assemblage is typical for inner/middle shelf environment with sufficient oxygen content. A general shallowing upward trend can be recognized at both localities, followed by visible interchange of different sedimentological and biotic features. Successive and oscillatory regression in the marginal marine environment was followed by salinity fluctuations and final brackish conditions with Ammonia-Elphidium assemblage. The laterally deeper environment reacted to regressive trends on finer scale with almost regular changes of benthic foraminiferal assemblages in the laminae (Heterolepa-Bolivina assemblage/Bolivina-Cassidulina assemblage/Elphidium-Asterigerinata assemblage). It might reflect sea-level oscillations with periodically increased siliciclastic and nutrient input from land or influence of seasonality on benthic assemblages, which occurred in the advanced phase of the regression near the Badenian/Sarmatian boundary.
