The large size telescope of the Cherenkov Telescope Array

Abstract: The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) project aims to implement the world's largest next generation of Very High Energy gamma-ray Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes devoted to the observation from a few tens of GeV to more than 100 TeV. To view the whole sky, two CTA sites are foreseen, one for each hemisphere. The sensitivity at the lowest energy range will be dominated by four Large Size Telescopes, LSTs, located at the center of each array and designed to achieve observations of high red-shift objects w… Show more

“…To reach this goal, 10s of IACTs will be deployed, which will provide the improvement of angular and energy resolution with respect to nowadays instruments as well. As a result, the number of detected VHE gamma-ray astrophysical sources will increase considerably, from about 280 today [26] to more than 1000 [27] [28]. The operation of CTA will have an estimated duration of 30 years [9] [29].…”

“…The already existing LST-North (LST-N) [1] is the baseline for the realization of these telescopes also in the south (LST-S). Nevertheless, because of more stringent anti-seismic requirements in the southern site, the LST-N structure can not be directly adopted for the LST-S. We are currently discussing some options, e.g., Option (a): employing the LST-N telescope structure with foundations including damping systems, Option (b): strengthening the mechanical structure, or other options between (a) and (b).…”

“…At this scale, the attention module mainly focuses on the shower pixels, and strongly rescales their value. The value of the signal pixels is multiplied by up to 1.8 in average, while, by construction, the rescaling factor computed by the spatial attention path of Dual Attention modules ranges in [1,2], as explained in Section 2. However, the attention maps are quite noisy at this scale, as also highlighted by the deviation measures.…”
