The Last Decade of HCI Research on Children and Voice-based Conversational Agents

Abstract: Voice-based Conversational Agents (CAs) are increasingly being used by children. Through a review of 38 research papers, this work maps trends, themes, and methods of empirical research on children and CAs in HCI research over the last decade. A thematic analysis of the research found that work in this domain focuses on seven key topics: ascribing human-like qualities to CAs, CAs' support of children's learning, the use and role of CAs in the home and family context, CAs' support of children's play, children's… Show more

“…The fundamental premise of improving security behaviors is that cybersecurity is both a technical and a psychological challenge [6,86], as even the most sophisticated technical measures fail to protect data privacy and security when not used as intended by the designer. Expertise [43,114] and awareness [62,98] trainings have proliferated, but the heterogeneity of users, their prior knowledge, and abilities [48,100], pose an insurmountable challenge to these interventions when implemented on a larger-scale.…”

“…The latter provide basic instruction and are far from supporting the conversation and inquiry needed for learning (e.g., dialogic). Although vocal interaction is a promising direction for MSEs for learning, there is a lack of research due to several technical and pragmatic challenges (e.g., learners that are linguistically and culturally diverse) [86]. Therefore, more research is needed to determine how to design MSEs that feature vocal interaction, as well as how its combination with the stimuli we discussed may influence the learning process.…”

“…While the participants in our study were all adults, a higher number of children experience some form of stammer [53]. Further research in the developing area of younger users of smart speakers [18] may be required to create a more comprehensive insight into the experiences of people who stammer, alongside other diverse speech patterns. Further quantitative research would also create additional insights by understanding how many people who stammer own and use smart speakers, and how frequently recognition errors emerge when interacting with them.…”
