The last resort: Workplace bullying and the consequences of changing jobs

Abstract: This study investigated the consequences of changing jobs for employees subjected to workplace bullying. First, we hypothesized that bullied employees would be more likely to change jobs than non‐bullied employees. Moreover, we hypothesized that changing jobs would result in a reduction of exposure to bullying behaviors and an alleviation of mental health problems for those bullied at baseline. The study was based on a longitudinal probability sample of the whole Swedish workforce (n = 1,095). The time lag was… Show more

“…Between T1 and T2, 174 employees had changed jobs. Changing jobs has a great impact on bullying (Rosander et al, 2022), and consequently they were excluded in the present study leaving 919 employees that had responded at both times. Statistics Sweden, a government agency, was responsible for all aspects regarding sampling procedures and distribution of the questionnaires.…”

“…The present thesis is based on a small slice of all the data that has been collected in the research project now called WHOLE-Work, Health, Organization, Leadership & Experience. Besides the present thesis, with the three included papers, I have also been a part of several other published papers (Nielsen et al, 2021;Rosander & Blomberg, 2019, 2022Rosander, Salin, et al, 2022;Rosander et al, 2020) as well as several books and book chapters (Blomberg, 2015(Blomberg, , 2016(Blomberg, , 2019Einarsen, Pedersen, et al, 2020), and a governmental-based guideline )-all published in the same period as my doctoral studies has been carried out. In 2017 Swedish Television also broadcasted a fiveepisode TV-series with me involved as an expert on workplace bullying.…”

“…It may be, sadly enough, that the most reasonable recommendation for an individual employee, in such a situation, is to change job-as soon as possible. Even if considered a last resort, changing job seems to lead to a substantial drop in bullying for exposed individuals (Rosander, Salin, et al, 2022). So even if it is a sad recommendation, leaving a dysfunctional organisation with non-supportive leadership practices may be the most health protective action on could make-both short and long-term.…”

“…Studies to date have investigated the consequences of bullying primarily using a between-person approach. In this perspective, past longitudinal and multiwave studies clearly illustrate that workplace bullying is associated with impaired psychological health over time, including psychosomatic health and sleep problems, depressive and anxiety symptoms, decreased life satisfaction, and burnout (Hansen et al, 2014; Laschinger & Fida, 2014; Nielsen et al, 2021; Raja et al, 2018; Rosander et al, 2022; Törnroos et al, 2020; Trépanier, Fernet, & Austin, 2015). In addition to causing serious harm to employees, the presence of bullying also undermines organizational effectiveness, as it is associated with employee absenteeism, disengagement, turnover intention, and actual turnover over time (see Boudrias et al, 2021).…”
