High-mountain lakes are suitable ecosystems for studying local environmental shifts driven by large-scale climate changes, with potential applications to predict future scenarios. The precise features in the response of species assemblages are not fully understood, and human pressure may often hide climatic signals. To investigate the origin and impact of past environmental changes in high-mountain ecosystems and apply this palaeoecological knowledge to anticipate future changes, we performed a multi-proxy study of a sediment core from Bassa Nera, a pond located close to montane–subalpine ecotone in the southern central Pyrenees. Combining pollen and diatom analysis at multidecadal resolution, we inferred vegetation shifts and peat bog development during the past millennium. We introduced a montane pollen ratio as a new palaeoecological indicator of altitudinal shifts in vegetation. Our results emphasize the sensitivity of the montane ratio to detect upward migrations of deciduous forest and the presence of the montane belt close to Bassa Nera pond during the Medieval Climate Anomaly. Changes in aquatic taxa allowed to date the onset of the surrounding peat bog which appeared and infilled the coring site around AD 1565. Overall, our results suggest a low-intensity human pressure and changes in management of natural resources during the last millennium, where farming was the main activity from the Medieval Climate Anomaly until AD 1500. Afterwards, people turned to highland livestock raising coinciding with the ‘Little Ice Age’.

The human impact on the environment in the Holocene has usually been characterized on the basis of palaeobotanical records, but attempts to distinguish the anthropogenic impact from natural events in landscape evolution have been the subject of much debate in recent years. The aim of this paper is to analyse small-mammal diversity and the presence of synanthropic species, whose small size makes them more sensitive to any changes in their environment that may occur. This study has allowed us to characterize palaeoclimatic and palaeoenvironmental changes, recording small changes\ud whether resulting from a human influence or otherwise. Our object of study is El Mirador cave, which has a sequence with a well-documented human occupation extending from 7200 to 3000 cal. BP. The study has led us to differentiate two phases. In one phase, we can see small changes in diversity related to climatic oscillations from ca. 7200 to 6800 cal. BP, while in the second phase, lasting from ca. 6800 to 3000 cal. BP, the changes in diversity and in the assemblage of synanthropic species are associated with human economic strategies. Moreover, we distinguish which kinds of economic activity (crop and livestock farming) have influenced these changes, because some small-mammal species are influenced, positively or negatively, by environmental changes based on crop farming and animal husbandry. All this information is contrasted with other archaeological proxies, such as the large-mammal and palaeobotanical assemblages from El Mirador cave. Furthermore, this integrative analysis has made it possible to identify the existence of altered environments more generally throughout the Iberian Peninsula from ca. 6000 cal. BP. It additionally confirms the theory of low human occupation intensity in the northern Meseta and in high mountainous areas during the early Neolithic

Reccopolis is the sole archaeologically-attested Visigothic city foundation in the Iberian Peninsula. Created under KingLeovigild in A.D. 576, the city played a notable role in the landscape, persisting as the focal point of the territory through to the 8th century AD. This paper offers an overview of the most recent results from the project undertaken in and around Reccopolis, which in the last two decades has drawn much from the discipline of Landscape Archeology, enabling fuller understanding of the agrosystem, the character and structure of rural occupation and exploitation, and a developed awareness of environmental conditions across the Early Middle Ages in the territory of the Central Plateau of the Iberian Peninsula.
