The Lateral Resolution of Three-Dimensional Underground Imaging by Using Amplitude Correlation Synthesis Processing Method

Abstract: The lateral resolution of the three-dimensional (3D) amplitude correlation synthesis processing (ACSP) method for imaging objects buried underground is studied by computational simulation and experimental measurement. An electromagneticinduction sound source is employed for radiating a powerful impulsive elastic wave into the ground. Twelve receivers at identical intervals are placed symmetrically to form a cross-shaped array with its center at the sound source. The 12 signals reflected from underground object… Show more

“…Detection of scatterers is useful in safety inspections of structures. [1][2][3][4][5] In particular, detection of cracks is critically important to satisfy the reliability requirements of infrastructure and industrial materials. Crack depths can be measured by ultrasound if they are open, 6,7) since the ultrasound is strongly scattered at open parts, e.g., tips or edges of cracks, with an air gap between crack faces.…”

“…Moreover, an amplitude correlation synthesis processing (ACSP) method was proposed for acquiring images with little error and high resolution from received signals with low SNR [3][4][5][6] . Up to now, the efficiency of the proposed imaging method, the lateral resolution and detecting ability, and the arrangement of receivers array for three-dimensional imaging, has been studied respectively.…”
