The Latest Developments in the Lighting Technologies in Dutch Horticulture

Abstract: The use of lamps for improvement of CO2-assimilation of greenhouse crops has increased enormously during the last 15 years in The Netherlands. The main reasons for the use of assimilation lighting are not only to increase crop production and product quality, especially in winter time, but also more and more to ensure a year round production and quality level which meets market demands.Assimilation lighting is often used for plant propagation and rose production, while its use in other ornamental crops is incre… Show more

“…Which LAI should be maintained is an important question in tomato cultivation. This is even more so for crops supplemented with artificial radiation, a common situation in Scandinavian countries and Canada, and becoming increasingly popular in The Netherlands to obtain year-round production (Marcelis et al, 2002). The use of assimilation light is expensive and light not intercepted by the crop contributes to the costs, but not to yield.…”

“…Supplementary lighting is increasingly used in greenhouse horticulture in areas where in part of the year natural light level is not sufficient for acceptable yield and product quality (Marcelis et al, 2002). Particularly in greenhouse ornamental production, supplementary light is a prerequisite to allow a year-round production (e.g.…”

“…Explanatory simulation models are known to be powerful tools to analyse quantitatively the effects of supplementary lighting on crop growth (Marcelis et al, 2002) and this analysis can be further extended to several external quality attributes (e.g. .…”

“…Growers in Holland, operate a farm internationally, for example in Spain, and maintain their greenhouse in the Netherlands, for the primary purpose to have a continuous production throughout the year (Marcelis et al, 2002). In the south of Spain, greenhouse production that ends with each hot summer season in lower coastal areas is being substituted by vegetable produce from the cooler highlands, typically within net-covered greenhouses, thereby enabling the year around supply.…”
