The leaky lens: a broad-band fixed-beam leaky-wave antenna

Abstract: Abstract-A novel type of leaky-wave antenna is presented. Differently from previously reported leaky-wave antennas, it is characterized by a constant beam direction over a very wide range of frequencies. The radiation originates at a slot etched at the interface between air and a dense dielectric, which is shaped to form a cylinder of elliptical cross sections of decreasing dimensions. Two prototypes have been designed, manufactured, and tested. The measurements are in very good agreement with the expectations… Show more

“…The idea in both papers was the extension to a focal plane array of the same configuration shown in [1]. In the present paper, the design, the scaled model realization, and the demonstration of antenna technology that extends the leaky lens radiation concept introduced in [2] and [3] to an imaging array are presented. In particular the concept is extended to implement a 7 elements linear imaging array.…”

“…In particular the concept is extended to implement a 7 elements linear imaging array. The array consists of 7 slots (of which only 5 are fed) etched on the focal ground plane of an elliptical lens as the one in [3]. With respect to a standard array solution the novel imaging array presents two characteristic features that render it particularly efficient.…”

“…1. The lens geometry is the composition of two leaky lens antennas [4]. The shape of each one of these dielectric lenses is obtained as union of an infinite set of cross section planes of truncated elliptical shape and decreasing dimension.…”

“…In particular a new design of the sensor antenna has been outlined. It essentially uses a different implementation of the leaky lens antenna concept discussed in [4]: the slot line is folded on the two side of a properly shaped dielectric lens instead of being terminated by a short circuit. This provides for a further enlargement of the operational bandwidth.…”

“…This type of slot radiates a leaky-wave beam into the denser dielectric with a dispersion characteristic that is weakly frequency dependent, as suggested by the fact that the transmission line mode is quasi-TEM at low frequency. The theory in [4] and [5] was applied in [6] and [7] to obtain dielectric leaky lens antennas. Bread boards and relevant measurements confirmed, as predicted, the feasibility of an unusual broad-band leaky-wave antenna.…”
