The Legacy of Lawrence Kohlberg: Implications for Counseling and Human Development

Abstract: Despite the great contribution by Lawrence Kohlberg to our understanding of moral development, counselors are only beginning to appreciate fully the implications of his developmental psychology for the practice of counseling and human development. Drawing on the collective body of Kohlberg's work, seven basic assumptions are shown to have direct relevance for conceptualizing counseling from a constructivist developmental approach.

“…The DPE program is based on an educational model that seeks to provide experiences that might enlighten individuals of the challenges and limitations of their means of making sense of the world (Foster and McAdams 1998). Opportunities to practice moral action through role taking and interactive exchanges with others can serve as a fertile ground for growth and reflection (Hayes 1994). The DPE model relies on the cognitive developmental theories that study the processes and nature of several related domains of development, including moral development, ego development, and conceptual complexity.…”

“…From such a perspective, experience is not just the best teacher, it is the only teacher. The demand, therefore, is to create the appropriate educational contexts in which students may be engaged in such activities that will promote their development most fully (Amerel, 1989;Dagley, 1987;Hayes, 1991Hayes, , 1994bHoshmond & Polkingbome, 1992;Kohlberg & Mayer, 1972;Kuhn, Amsel, & O'Loughlin, 1988;Schon, 1987;Sprinthall & Thies-Sprinthall, 1993;Weinstein & Alschuler, 1987).…”

“…Rogerian or person centered counselling seems to have entrenched in the literature the value of this interpersonal contact. Hayes (1994) and Kohlberg (1969) have supported this. It is thought appropriate that the literature be moved on, to an emphasis on both the interpersonal and the intrapersonal nature of counselling as shown by the three stage model in Figure 4.…”
