The Life Histories of Two Temporarily Coexisting, Pond Dwelling Cladocerans

Abstract: Investigations on the life histories of two cfadocerans, Uoina brachiata and Daphnia obfusa, in a small, nearly temporary pond in South Germany revealed that M. hrachiafa is better adapted to fluctuating environmental conditions; the species dominated from May to October. D. obrusa was present in spring and autumn/winter but disappeared completely during the summer months. Both species coexisted for extended periods in spring and autumn; abundance of D. ohrusa was generally by an order of magnitute lower. Four… Show more

“…However, temperate taxa are less sensitive to low food levels than tropical taxa. The rate of population increase is yet another important variable affected by temperature and food level as well as their interaction (Maier, 1993). In tropical species population (2002) and Nandini & Sarma (2000) Ceriodaphnia cornuta 13-25 Nandini (2000) and…”

“…Cladoceran reaction to hunger also differs. Moina may withstand hunger for one day but not three days [82]. After 24 hours of malnutrition on Artemia, (DHA) contents might be less than half of their starting value.…”
