The lifetime prevalence of traumatic events and posttraumatic stress disorder in the Netherlands

Abstract: Little information exists on the lifetime prevalence of traumatic events and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the general population of the Netherlands. A national representative sample of 1087 adults aged 18 to 80 years was selected using random digit dialing and then surveyed by telephone using the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) to determine the prevalence of trauma and DSM-IV PTSD. The lifetime prevalence of any potential trauma was 80.7%, and the lifetime prevalence of PTSD was … Show more

“…Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a highly disabling psychiatric disorder, which develops in~10% of traumaexposed individuals (de Vries and Olff, 2009). PTSD has an estimated lifetime prevalence of~8% in the general population (de Vries and Olff, 2009) and is characterized by symptoms of intrusions and avoidance, negative alterations in cognition and mood (eg, diminished interest in significant activities), and hyperarousal (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).…”

“…Prevalence rates of PTSD following a traffic accident, one of the most common injury causing traumatic events (de Vries and Olff, 2009), vary greatly, from 8-45% at 1 month to 7-26% at 12 months (for a review, see Heron-Delaney et al, 2013). To explain why some develop PTSD and others do not, studies have examined the role of the hypothalamus-pituitaryadrenal (HPA) axis (Delahanty et al, 2000(Delahanty et al, , 2003(Delahanty et al, , 2005McFarlane et al, 1997McFarlane et al, , 2011Resnick et al, 1995Resnick et al, , 1997Shalev et al, 2008;Yehuda et al, 1998b).…”

“…In the Netherlands, the lifetime prevalence of any potential trauma has been found to be 80.7% and the lifetime prevalence of PTSD is 7.4% (De Vries & Olff, 2009). PTSD is associated with an array of comorbid mental and somatic health-related problems.…”
