The link between Helicobacter pylori infection and rosacea

Abstract: We conclude that: (1) rosacea is a disorder with various gastrointestinal symptoms closely related to gastritis, especially involving the antrum mucosa; (2) the eradication of Hp leads to improvement of symptoms of rosacea and reduction in related gastrointestinal symptoms; (3) the lack of improvement of cutaneous symptoms in rosacea after eradication of Hp from the gastric mucosa could depend on bacteria in the oral cavity; and (4) rosacea could be considered as one of the extragastric symptoms of Hp infectio… Show more

“…The prevalence of H. pylori infection was found higher in patients with rosacea when compared to the general population, and its eradication has been shown to influence the clinical outcome of this disease (31,39,(44)(45)(46) . However, other studies have not found such difference (41,(47)(48)(49) .…”

“…Improvment in the symptomatology of the disease noticed after the treatment of HP infection is supported by several studies, while other authors consider that this treatment and RS evolution are not connected (8,9). Some authors go even further and claim that RS is in fact an extragastric manifestation of HP infection (2,10,11). However, there is still a lot of debate in the medical literature regarding whether or not HP has a high prevalence in RS patients.…”

“…Regarding an association between other gastrointestinal pathologies and RS, studies published after the year 2000 indicate a high incidence of chronic active gastritis especially in the antrum and the stomach body in patients with RS versus sham (2,11). The author's conclusion was that RS can frequently associate with antrum gastritis.…”

“…Our study found a seroprevalence of (65.4%) and the association was found to be statistically significant CI= 14.48(3.94-56.75), p value: <0.0001 which supported the authors who believe that H. pylori probably constitutes a risk factor and was found to be associated in 27-90% of patients or at least in certain groups of individuals. [13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20] Others comment on the beneficial effect of H. pylori eradication in rosacea. 15,17,[21][22][23][24] Some other investigators contradict any associations between rosacea and H. pylori infection.…”

[25][26][27][28] Based on the different studies to date Lazaridou et al later concluded that due to the high prevalence of anti-Hp antibodies in humans in conjunction with the fact that the antibiotics are effective for both disease entities, it would be very difficult to stratify the population studied against all factors that influence both rosacea and H. pylori infection.…”
