The Link between Social and Structural Integration: Co- and Interethnic Friendship Selection and Social Influence within Adolescent Social Networks

Abstract: Assimilation theories argue that social ties with majority-group members enhance the structural integration of ethnic minority members, whereas under certain conditions, coethnic social ties can also benefit minority members' socioeconomic outcomes. We examine these propositions through a social network perspective, focusing on friendship networks and educational expectations in adolescence, during which peer socialization is crucial. Longitudinal data from 1,992 adolescents in 91 classrooms allow us to invest… Show more

“…Students select their friends based on their own characteristics (ego), the characteristics of their peers (alters), and dyadic characteristics such as similarity in these attributes. Previous studies have shown such processes for sociodemographic characteristics such as gender and ethnicity, but also academic achievement (Gremmen et al, 2017; Lorenz et al, 2020, 2021). We replicated those effects.…”

“…Longitudinal social network models such as SAOMs allow us to disentangle social influence and social selection processes (such as homophily). Using such models, homophily regarding gender and ethnicity have been demonstrated to be key criteria for the selection of friends (Lorenz et al, 2021; Raabe et al, 2019), and there is evidence suggesting that academic achievement is a predictor of friendship choices, too, (Gremmen et al, 2017; Laninga-Wijnen et al, 2019). There is much less theoretical and empirical work on the question whereas students’ ASCs could also be linked to friendship selection processes.…”

“…However, the resources embedded in co-ethnic friendships often differ from those embedded in inter-ethnic friendships 17 . In particular, immigrant students benefit from social contact with majority group members 18 . Such contacts provide access to resources such as exposure to the host country’s language.…”

“…Social contacts with the majority group in particular offer students with a refugee background important resources for acquiring the language of the host country, thus increasing their chances in the education system and the labor market and acculturating overall ( Edele et al, 2020 ; Lorenz et al, 2021 ). Supporting social integration is therefore not only of individual importance for the development of the students concerned but is also of long-term interest concerning current political discourses on migration and inclusion policy ( Lorenz et al, 2021 ; Boda et al, 2023 ; Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, 2023 ). While trauma-sensitive school concepts are increasingly being established in the United States of America ( Simon et al, 2020 ), limited efforts have been made to implement such concepts into European school systems.…”
