“…The aim of our study was to investigate the occurrence and relative abundance of D. reticulatus ticks in habitats located in the immediate vicinity of a river bed (the ecological corridor of the Wieprz River). The relevance of this study is supported by the increasing number of reports on the presence of D. reticulatus in areas where the species was not found previously, e.g., north, western, south-western, and central Poland [18][19][20]. Whereas, eastern Poland is an area of high density of D. reticulatus [21] however, there are no previous simultaneous studies on monitoring of seasonal activity of that species in various physicogeographical areas including influence of abiotic and biotic factors in the area of river ecological corridor.…”

“…In several European countries (Slovakia, the Czech Republic, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Germany), habitat expansion of D. reticulatus was noted 6 , and the northern distribution border in the Baltic countries (Lithuania, Latvia) moved further to the north 7 . On the Polish territory in “the gap” zone, new foci occurrences of this tick species have also been reported 5 , 8 10 which leads to closer borders between the western and the eastern D. reticulatus populations.…”

“…Dermacentor reticulatus is frequently found on pets, mainly on dogs (their movements without tick control can contribute to the spread of ticks) and is active in the winter or during the colder months [ 96 , 97 , 98 ]. Its range has also expanded in Europe [ 99 , 100 , 101 , 102 ]. Such a discovery deserves attention in order to better understand the eco-epidemiology of TBEV in relation to the trend of increasing human TBE cases, particularly since these ticks regularly feed on domestic ruminants, which may then transmit TBEV through their milk.…”
