The locative web

Abstract: The concept of location has become very popular in many applications on the Web, in particular for those which aim at connecting the real world with resources on the Web. However, the Web as it is today has no overall location concept, which means that applications have to introduce their own location concepts and have done so in incompatible ways. By turning the Web into a location-aware Web, which we call the "Locative Web", location-oriented applications get better support for their location concepts on the… Show more

“…Joshi and Luo [16] employ reverse geocoding using location coordinates from image data to obtain nearby points of interest connecting an image with its geographic location. Wilde and Kofahl [17] describe the use of reverse geocoding in retrieving location types as an essential component for a geo-enabled Web browser. Our work shares some tangential similarities with the above work (i.e the use of clustering), but differs fundamentally by using latlong information from gazetteers and attribute weighting to derive a more intelligent means of performing schema matching across data sources in the GIS domain.…”

“…Though there are many web-based applications that manage location data, the web itself currently is location-agnostic [Wilde and Kofahl 2008]. However, this situation is beginning to change.…”
