The longitudinal effects of alexithymia on romantic relationships

Abstract: Using the tenets of Affection Exchange Theory, the study predicted longitudinal effects of alexithymia on both romantic relational outcomes (satisfaction and commitment) and relational communication (affectionate communication and relational maintenance behaviors). The study also predicted that Time 2 levels of relational communication would mediate the longitudinal effects of alexithymia on the relational outcomes. The results largely supported the predictions, with Time 1 alexithymia significantly negatively… Show more

“…Above and beyond the theoretical tenets tested above, a multitude of other studies have identified variables that are associated with relational maintenance processes including personality traits such as the big five (and the use of Facebook for maintenance activities; Seidman, 2019), Machiavellianism (Ragsdale & Brandau‐Brown, 2005), and psychological traits such as alexithymia, which is an inability to describe emotion (Hesse & Gibbons, 2019). The traits of wanting to be valued and perceived to be valued by others have both been independently associated with maintenance mechanisms such as positive sentiment toward partners, self‐reported maintenance behaviors, perceptions of partners' maintenance behaviors (e.g., enacting sacrifice, affection, warmth, and support), and observations of responsive and unresponsive behaviors (Lemay & Spongberg, 2015).…”

“…For example, people with alexithymia (dysfunction in the ability to identify and describe emotions) typically lack words to describe their emotional experiences. Participants higher in alexithymia tend to judge an affective stimulus, such as negatively-valenced musical stimuli, as more neutral than those low in alexithymia (Hesse & Gibbons, 2019; Larwood et al, 2020).…”

“…The latest studies on alexithymia have adopted an interpersonal perspective, aiming to identify the effect of alexithymia on affective and social relationships. Alexithymia has been shown to negatively affect one’s ability to understand and relate to others; it is associated with poor social and affective skills, a low level of social support [ 34 , 35 ], and problems in couple relationships [ 36 , 37 , 38 ].…”
