The LUE-200 accelerator at the IREN facility: Current status and development

Abstract: The general scheme and current status of an electron linear accelerator with an S band travelling wave (f = 2856 MHz) accelerating structure-a driver for a pulsed neutron source (the Intense Resonance Neutron source (IREN)) at the Frank Laboratory of Neutron Physics of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research-are presented. The parameters of the accelerating system and the measured parameters of the electron beam-pulse beam current, duration of the current pulse, repetition rate, electron energy spec trum, and… Show more

“…A magnetic E-core with a variable magnetic rigidity of 0.166-0.7 T•m is placed after the second section. The electron beam in the spectrometer magnetic field is turned up to 90 • and extracted from the spectrometer vacuum chamber through a 50 µm stainless steel window [22]. The neutron-producing target is made of tungsten-based alloy and represents a cylinder 40 mm in diameter and 100 mm in height housed within an aluminum can 160 mm in diameter and 200 mm in height.…”

“…For example, this situation is possible in the case of the beam injection into the accelerating structure without its pre-acceleration, when the initial velocities of the particles are considerably less than the speed of light. The electron accelerators VEPP-5 at BINP [2] and LUE-200 at JINR [3] can be mentioned as the examples. In these accelerators the nonrelativistic beam with the energy of 0.2 MeV is injected into the disk loaded traveling wave accelerating structure with constant impedance [4].…”
