The lunar cycle determines availability of coral‐reef fishes at fish markets

Abstract: During 139 visits between March 2009 and May 2011, it was found that the availability of reef fishes at a local fish market in the Philippines was highly affected by the lunar cycle. The number of vendors selling reef fishes was significantly lower (13.4%) during third lunar quarters (full moon periods) than during the first, second and fourth lunar quarters (40.2, 25.0 and 30.0%, respectively). It is recommended that the influence of the lunar cycle on fish availability is considered when designing sampling s… Show more

“…In addition, catch success was dependent upon environmental regimes. New moon phases and other environmental cycles are known to increase fishing success and landings, but the degree of dependence on favorable environmental regimes can grow as stocks become depleted [ 19 , 57 , 58 ]. Here, catch success for many mid-size predators, invertivores, and some herbivores was dependent upon seasonality and moon phases, albeit to a lesser degree than in other Micronesian jurisdictions [ 30 ].…”

“…Moreover, marine biological research in the Davao Gulf has only been initiated in relatively recent years (e.g. Mueller et al., ; Bos and Gumanao, ). Considering the above, it was hypothesized that fish populations in the Davao Gulf could provide valuable information on lengths and weights of fishes uncommon in other seas in the Indo‐Pacific region.…”

“…Coral reefs in the Philippines are located within the Coral Triangle (Hoeksema, ) and its fish fauna is one of the most diverse in the world (Carpenter & Springer, ; Weeks, Russ, Alcala, & White, ). Most ichthyological knowledge is available from the central and northern islands of the archipelago, whereas research in the southern islands has only recently been intensified (Bos & Gumanao, ; Gumanao, Saceda‐Cardoza, Mueller, & Bos, ). Although more than 1700 fish species have been identified in the Philippines (Carpenter & Springer, ), new records (e.g.…”
