“…The limestone beds are noticeably thicker than intervening marls throughout the 59 couplets found in the Oyambre section (Payros et al ., ). In the interval studied herein, the limestone beds vary considerably in thickness (range: 40 to 100 cm; average: 67·5 cm), while marls are more homogeneous (range: 20 to 50 cm; average: 34·17 cm).…”

“…The gulf was flanked by shallow‐water carbonate ramps, from which sediment was episodically washed away and transported offshore by storm‐triggered sediment gravity flows, and turbiditic submarine fans were formed at the bottom of the basin, up to 1500 m deep (Pujalte et al ., ; Payros et al ., ). Previous studies on Pyrenean successions retrieved signs of global climate evolution, such as distinctive long‐term climatic trends, short‐term astronomical oscillations and episodic hyperthermal events (Dinarès‐Turell et al ., ; Payros et al ., , , ; Rodríguez‐Tovar et al ., ; Batenburg et al ., ;).…”

“…On a larger scale, thick massive intervals containing three to four blurred limestone-marl couplets alternate with thinner intervals composed of two prominent limestone-marl couplets. This largerscale lithological alternations define a stacking pattern of bundles with individual thicknesses of 2 to 6 m that were outlined by Payros et al (2015) (Figure 1c). Such an arrangement led Payros et al (2015) to consider that the limestone-marl couplets are the sedimentary manifestation of astronomical precession cycles of 21 kyr duration, the larger-scale bundles being the physical expression of the 100 kyr eccentricity cycles (short eccentricity).…”

“…Stratigraphically above, on the eastern side of the cape, the Acebosa Fm is composed of 130 m of upper Lutetian and lower Bartonian hemipelagic and turbiditic deposits accumulated on an eastward facing slope that progressively deepened from 500 to 900 m (Payros et al, 2015). Here, we focus on the lower interval Payros et al (2015). Note the original lithological bundles sketched along the lower part of the section (the red box delimits the interval studied in detail herein).…”
