The LVV Auger line shape of sulfur on copper studied by Auger photoelectron coincidence spectroscopy

Abstract: We have studied the line shapes of Cu(0 0 1)-p (2 × 2)S L2VV and L3VV Auger decay by means of Auger photoelectron coincidence spectroscopy. Measuring the LVV Auger spectrum in coincidence with S 2p1/2 and 2p3/2 photoelectrons respectively, we have been able to separate the two overlapping Auger spectra and determine their intrinsic line shapes. The two Auger transitions, though shifted in energy, display an identical line shape whose main features can be qualitatively understood considering a single particle a… Show more

“…The peaks at lower energy side of S 3p are resonantly enhanced with the Mo 4p edge, indicating these final states have significant Mo 4d contribution mixed into them [33]. The broad peak at the higher energy side of S 3s is due to normal Auger decay peak of S (LVV) [70]. An enhancement in the absorption intensity of the peaks was observed in the binding energy of 9 eV to 15 eV, indicating the emitted electron from S 2p remains at an excited state and behaves as an S(L 2,3 VV) spectator in the decay process [65,66].…”

“…For this material U W / 0.8 ≈ hence its Auger lineshape is in the intermediate region between a band-like and atomic like behavior. The complexity of the Auger spectra can be reduced by electron coincidence spectroscopy and significant experimental advances have been made in the past [6,[8][9][10][11][12][13].…”

“…APECS has also been used to study the electronic structure of the Cu(001)-p(2x2)S adsorbate system [21]. The overlapping L 2 V V and L 3 V V spectra could be separated by measuring in coincidence with the S 2p 1/2 and 2p 3/2 photoelectron lines, respectively, and their intrinsic line shapes could be determined.…”
