The Making of an Encyclopedia: The 3rd Edition of the "Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology"

Abstract: The utility of encyclopedias in the specialized chemical information library and the historical development of the "Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology" are discussed. Methods used for the development of the editorial plan for the third edition of the Encyclopedia are reviewed, comparisons are made between the projected third edition and the previous editions, and new features of the third edition, such as use of Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Numbers, SI units, and semiautomated index procedu… Show more

“…However, unlike conventional polyesters, UPs have no internal polyester linkages. Therefore, VE resins provide better corrosion resistance than UPs 1–3. VE resins are amenable to most high‐temperature processes, including the compression molding of sheet‐molding compounds (SMCs), the injection molding of bulk‐molding compounds (BMCs), and pultrusion.…”

“…19 One notable demonstration of the redox resilience of AQs is the large industrial application of ethylAQs for the production of H 2 O 2 from H 2 and O 2 . 20 Apart from the above redox properties, AQs constitute the largest group of natural pigments found in various plants, which are widely used as dyes in the textile industry due to their photostability, [21][22][23] indicating the potential of this type of molecule to absorb a wide range of visible light. With combined redox and light-harvesting properties, AQs are promising metal-free photocatalysts for the visible-light-driven aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohols and amides.…”

“…harmful effects, these uses are now banned and it is only used in some industrial applications [2,3]. The primary routes of potential human exposure to CCl 4 are inhalation, ingestion, and dermal contact [2,4].…”
