The Management of Diabetes Mellitus Using Medicinal Plants and Vitamins

Clement G. Yedjou,
Jameka Grigsby,
Ariane Mbemi
et al.

Abstract: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a serious chronic metabolic disease that is associated with hyperglycemia and several complications including cardiovascular disease and chronic kidney disease. DM is caused by high levels of blood sugar in the body associated with the disruption of insulin metabolism and homeostasis. Over time, DM can induce life-threatening health problems such as blindness, heart disease, kidney damage, and stroke. Although the cure of DM has improved over the past decades, its morbidity and mortal… Show more

“…[49] The pathological conditions of many diseases, including Alzheimer's, obesity, cancer, and cardiovascular disease, may be cured by the inhibition of target enzymes. [50] α-amylase and α-glucosidase, for example, play vital roles in regulating blood sugar levels in diabetics. [51] Inhibiting these enzymes may help manage blood sugar levels after a high-carbohydrate diet.…”

“…The use of medicinal plants in this context might signify an increasing inclination toward complementary and alternative methods in diabetes care, with individuals actively seeking additional support from natural compounds alongside prescribed medications. This trend underscores the importance of adopting comprehensive healthcare strategies that seamlessly incorporate both conventional treatments and natural supplements to effectively address the various dimensions of diabetes management ( Sekhon-Loodu and Rupasinghe, 2019 ; Yedjou et al, 2023 ).…”

“…Diabetes is multifactorial complication often leads to major cardiovascular complications. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is brought on by high blood sugar levels that interfere with insulin metabolism and homeostasis [1]. The metabolic condition with the clinical presentation of longlasting hyperglycemia is diabetes mellitus (DM).…”
